Gold Fields Limited. JSE: GFI

Background of Gold Fields
Gold Fields Limited is a gold mining company based in South Africa and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), with secondary listings on the New York Stock Exchange and the Swiss Stock Exchange.
The company’s history can be traced back to 1887, when Cecil John Rhodes and Charles Rudd formed Gold Fields of South Africa. The company in its current form was established when the assets of Gold Fields of South Africa and Glencor Limited were amalgamated in 1998. The company is one of the world’s largest gold producers and has a globally diversified portfolio, owning eight mines in South Africa, Ghana, Australia and Peru. There are also operations in Chile, Finland and the Phillipines. The company has average annual production of 2 million ounces. This includes copper, nickel and platinum group metals production.
Gold Fields employs approximately 9 000 full-time employees and more than 7 000 contractors. The group recorded revenue of US$2.5 billion in 2015. Gold Fields Shares Growth Driver
Gold Fields has had to withstand difficult conditions within the gold industry recently, including a falling gold price, labour strikes and a weakened global economy. The group’s globally diversified portfolio and strong operations allowed the company to cushion some of this impact and gain from commodity currency depreciation against the dollar. The company embarked on a transformation process in 2012, when gold prices were still around their peak of US$1800 per ounce. The focus was to change the company into a leaner, more focused organisation. An unforeseen decline in gold prices pushed many gold mining companies onto the brink of ruin, but the fortuitous restructuring of Gold Fields made the company better equipped to deal with these trade conditions.
Despite a 45% decline in the gold price from 2011 to 2015, the company is generating more cash than when the gold price was at its peak. Key strategic priorities include setting up the South Deep mine in South Africa, solidifying cash flow and margin and distributing dividends of between 25% and 35% of normalised earnings. International operations have been improving, and in Australia (the biggest international region) current levels of exploration expenditure are set to continue and grow production. The group’s growth strategy also hinges on moves to buy producing assets.
