How Errors Are Identified

Internal Identification

  • Pre-publication review by editors and fact-checkers
  • Post-publication monitoring by senior editors
  • Monthly audits of high-traffic evergreen content

External Reporting

  • Reader submissions via madelien@sashares.co.za or online form
  • Subject complaints from individuals or organisations featured in coverage
  • Peer review from journalists or experts in covered fields

Response time: All error reports acknowledged within 24 hours, with investigation status update within 72 hours.

Correction Investigation Process

Not every reported "error" requires correction. We investigate all claims and apply consistent standards.

Investigation Steps

  1. Initial assessment (within 4-24 hours depending on severity)
  2. Verification by fact-checker with original sources
  3. Editorial decision by Editor-in-Chief or Managing Editor
  4. Implementation per timeline standards

When We Do NOT Issue Corrections

  • Difference of opinion (interpretation vs. facts)
  • Matters of public record accurate at time of publication (we issue updates instead)
  • Unsubstantiated claims without evidence
  • Bad-faith complaints attempting to suppress accurate critical coverage

Correction Display Standards

Corrections must be visible, clear, and permanent. We never silently edit articles or bury corrections.

Standard Format at Top of Article

CORRECTION [Timestamp]: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that [error]. In fact, [correct information]. This has been corrected.

In Article Body

Original text shown in strikethrough:

The policy was implemented in 2024 2025.

For Major Corrections

Affecting article thesis or headline:

  • Permanent entry on public Corrections page (sashares.co.za/corrections)
  • Social media update on platforms where article was promoted
  • Email notification to subscribers
  • Editorial note explaining how error occurred

  • Date of correction
  • Article title (with link)
  • Original error
  • Corrected information
  • How error was identified

Update vs. Correction

Use "Update" when:

  • Breaking news develops with new facts
  • Policies or situations change after publication
  • Additional context becomes available that doesn't contradict original reporting

Use "Correction" when:

  • Original reporting contained factual errors
  • Quotes were misattributed
  • Data was incorrect at time of publication

Unpublishing Policy

We rarely remove published articles. Content is unpublished only when:

  1. Publication creates ongoing threat to individual safety
  2. Court order requires removal
  3. Article is so flawed that correction is insufficient (fabrication, plagiarism)
  4. Article violates privacy laws and correction cannot remedy

When article is removed:

  • Original URL preserved with explanation of removal
  • Corrections page entry documenting removal
  • Editor-in-Chief approval required

FAQ: Corrections

How quickly do you correct errors?

Urgent corrections within 4 hours. Standard factual corrections within 24 hours. Minor typos within 48 hours.

Do you notify readers when you make corrections?

Major corrections are announced on social media and via email to subscribers. Standard corrections appear prominently on the article. Urgent corrections trigger immediate notifications.

What if I disagree with your fact-checking?

If our investigation concludes the article is accurate, we will not issue a correction. However, if you provide credible evidence our conclusion was wrong, we will reopen the investigation. You may also submit a letter to the editor.

Can I request removal of my name instead of a correction?

Rarely. If the article contains factual errors about you, we will correct them. If the article is accurate but you regret participating, we generally do not remove your name unless there are extraordinary circumstances (safety risk, legal mandate).

How do you decide between "correction" and "update"?

Corrections address errors in original reporting. Updates reflect new developments after publication. If the original was accurate at the time but the situation changed, we issue an update.

Do you preserve the original error when correcting?

Yes. We use strikethrough or brackets to show what was incorrect, alongside the corrected information.

Can I report errors anonymously?

Yes. We investigate anonymous reports with the same rigor. However, we cannot provide status updates without contact information.

Can I report errors in old articles?

Yes. We correct errors regardless of publication date and welcome reader reports on archival content.
