Background of Google LLC

  • Google LLC is one of the four largest companies worldwide alongside Amazon, Apple, and Facebook. It is an American-based multinational technology company that was founded in 1998 and is headquartered in California.

  • Google LLC has a rich history that dates back to 1996 as a research project conducted by Larry Page and Sergey Brynn. Both its founders were PhD Students at the Stanford University at the time.

  • Initially, Google had a third founder namely Scott Hassan, who wrote the code for the original Google Search engine, but he had left before Google was officially founded as a company in 1996 when he pursued a career in robotics.

  • Page and Brin theorized an algorithm that could analyse the relationships among websites as opposed to conventional search engines that ranked results based on a count of how many times search terms appeared on the page.

  • The algorithm would determine the relevance of a site according to the number of pages in addition to the importance of those pages which linked back to the original site. This algorithm was called PageRank and when Page told Hassan about the idea, coding started

  • Due to the system of the search engine backlinking to an original website to estimate its importance, Page and Brin nicknamed it “BackRub”.

  • Due to the misspelling of the word “googol”, the name changed to Google from BackRub shortly after 1996 and the domain name for Google LLC was registered in late 1997 followed by the incorporation of it as a company.

  • Google was funded by various parties such as Andy Bechtolsheim (co-founder of Sun Microsystems), Jeff Bezos (Amazon.com), David Cheriton and Ram Shriram, allowing for the opening of a shop in Menlo Park, California.

  • During 2000, Google LLC began selling text-based advertisements associated with search keywords, despite it being against the initial opposition of the founders towards Google becoming a search engine being advertisement-funded.

  • The system which was used to sell the shares was built by Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse and it resulted in a sale of $1.67 billion worth of shares, providing Google LLC with market capitalization of over $23 billion.

  • In October 2006, YouTube was acquired by Google LLC for $1.65 billion in Google LL Stock, with the deal seeing finalization in November. Following the acquisition of YouTube, was that of DoubleClick for $3.1 billion.
