Background of Prescient

  • Prescient Limited is a multinational group, based in South Africa, focusing on financial services and information management services. The group is comprised of two main operating segments – Financial Services and Information Management. The group’s history stems back to 1998, and the operating segments were brought together when Prescient Limited shares were first listed for sale on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 2012. Today, through organic growth and moves to buy other companies, Precient has a strong presence in sub-Saharan Africa and operations spanning Europe, Asia and Australia.

  • The financial services portfolio includes investment management, stock broking, wealth management, corporate advisory, insurance products, retail and institutional retirement and fund services and administration. Assets under management and administration total more than R110 billion.

  • Information management functions are carried out by subsidiary the PBT Group, which comprises several businesses involved in business intelligence, application development, data integration and information management.

  • Prescient employs over 500 people, recorded total income of R910 million in 2016 and has a JSE market cap of R1.7 billion. Prescient share price has however stagnated on the JSE, indicating illiquid trade and reluctance to buy the stock.

Prescient Share Growth Driver

  • Prescient and Prescient share price have endured laboured performance of late, having not escaped the impacts of the economic downturn in South Africa. A 9% increase in total income in 2016 was driven by a 13% growth in assets under management and a 39% growth in third party assets under administration. The information management services business has benefitted from strong demand in South Africa, the rest of Africa and Australia, growing income by 10%. This was however negatively offset by a reduction in management and performance fees and reduced returns on financial assets, particular those held in Prescient Life. Prescient Securities also operated under difficult trade conditions with lower margins.

  • Overall, net profit was down by 13% to R119.1 million. This was due to various factors such as increased staff costs to accommodate growth in assets under management, increased technology and information management services costs due to the depreciation of the rand, once off expenses in investment management and a loss on the sale of the Greenfields Institute of Business. As result of the reduced profits, full year dividends were down to 4.75 cents from 5.75 cents in 2015.

Prescient Group Investor Tip

  • The JSE stocks chart shows that Prescient share price has hovered around the R1 mark since July 2013, which won’t prompt investors to run out and buy the share, particularly after the mediocre financial data recorded by the group in 2016. Since listing in 2012, Prescient shares have never really grabbed the attention of investors, but their true worth will most likely only be proven when better economic conditions prevail. At present, there is still understandable reluctance to buy what has been an underperforming stock.
