Factors affecting crude palm oil (CPO) prices

While crude oil is a widely traded commodity around the world, market research indicates that the commodity has lost its popularity over recent years. A multitude of factors may affect the price of Palm oil,  including supply, demand, environmental impact and  substitution.  The main reason for its drop in popularity is deforestation.  Deforestation has a major environmental impact, which can tie in with all other factors mentioned.

Palm Oil Trading options – An overview

Palm Oil Futures

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange or CME has two contracts on offer which tracks the price of palm oil.  The two contracts are:

  • The USD-denominated Malaysian Crude Palm Oil Calendar Futures (CPO)
  • The USD-denominated Malaysian Palm olein Calendar Futures (OPF)

The crude palm oil future tracks the price of unrefined palm oil, whereas the palm olein tracks the price of refined oil. Futures refer to a derivative instrument through which investors will make leveraged bets on commodity prices. If the prices decline, traders will be required to deposit additional margin in order to maintain their positions. Both contracts are financially settled.

Palm Oil Options on Futures

The CME will offer an average price options contract on USD Malaysian Crude Palm Oil. Options are derivative instruments which employs leverage in order to trade commodities. As with futures, options will come with an expiration date. However, options also carry a strike price, which refers to the price above which the option finishes in the money. Options buyers will pay a price best known as a premium in order to purchase contracts and the options bet will only succeed if the price of the crude palm oil futures rises above the strike price by an amount which is larger than the premium paid for the contract.   Options traders must be 100% certain about the size and timing of the moves they make in crude palm oil futures.  This has to be done in order for clients to make profit from their trades.

Palm Oil ETF Trades

Palm Oil ETF trades as shares on exchanges much in the same way as stocks. There are no ETF trades which specifically covers palm oil but traders who are looking for exposure can buy country funds in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Contracts for Difference ( CFDs)

Another popular way of trading palm oil is through the use of a contract for difference (CFD) derivative instrument. CFDs will allow traders to speculate on the price of palm oil.
