Gold Brands shares

Background of Gold Brands

  • Gold Brands Investments is an investment company based in South Africa, with interests in food services and franchising. The company focuses on aggressive expansion of high-grossing, fast moving franchises, having rolled out 331 stores in South Africa. Brands include well-known enterprises such as Chesenyama, 1+1 Pizza, Opa!Pitaland, Chicken Wild Wings and Blacksteer.

  • The company consists of divisions Gold Brands Food Services (which holds Sauce World) and Franchising to Africa (which holds all of the company’s consumer franchise brands).

  • The company’s founders have a long and successful history of franchising, with 40 years of experience between them, and established the company in 2012 with just one Chesenyama Store at Wits University. After rolling out 331 stores by the end of 2015, Gold Brands listed on the AltX of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in early 2016, with a total of 25 million Gold Brands shares issued at a purchase price of R1. The live online stocks chart shows that Gold Brands share price has declined slightly since listing.

  • Today, assets are valued at R91 million, and 85% of the group’s franchisees are black, making Gold Brands a highly empowered company.

Gold Brands Shares Growth Driver

  • Still a fledgling business, Gold Brands aims to one day become a leading franchise company within South Africa and internationally, by offering unique brands with good value products, backed by a cost efficient supply chain and simple business models.

  • Goals for the company include expanding the existing portfolio to include brands in international locations, develop innovative and delicious products, provide profitability to franchisees, and commit to comprehensive support, training and development of franchisees responsible for sale of the group’s products. Chesenyama has been the fastest growing brand, with 41 site applications received in addition to the existing 300+ stores. The group’s 2016 financial year data showed profits of R9 million. Challenges for the company include pressured consumer spending and the highly competitive market which Gold Brands has decided to buy into.

  • In May 2016, the group added Hot Chicks to its portfolio, with the opening of one store and two more planned in the near future.

Gold Brands Group Investor Tip

  • Most investment analysts have said that the listing of Gold Brands hasn’t attracted the attention of investors on the JSE, with a consensus that the company listed at the worst possible time, considering the struggling low-end fast food sector. Gold Brands share price has declined slightly since listing, and the company is competing against highly successful, established fast food and restaurant groups such as Famous Brands and Spur Corporation. Investors are therefore likely to buy these perennially profitable stocks rather than Gold Brands shares.

  • Even the large food stocks have been struggling due to pressured consumer spending and high levels of competition, so the forecast is that Gold Brands shares won’t be a particularly tempting buy.
