Esor shares

Background of Esor

  • Esor Limited is a specialist geotechnical services, earthworks, roads and pipeline construction company operating throughout South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands.

  • Esor was listed on the AltX of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in 2006, where for three years it was one of the exchange’s top-performing companies. With investors scrambling to buy the shares, the group transferred to the main board of the JSE in 2009, where Esor share price has plummeted due to difficult trade conditions.

  • Today, Esor is one of South Africa’s premier civil engineering and construction groups, providing construction solutions spanning six divisions: developments, building and housing, infrastructure, pipelines, pipe services and sanitation.

  • Within the pipelines division, pipejacking lies at the heart of Esor’s history, with the company having set every major southern African record in terms of size, distance and speed.

Esor Shares Growth Driver

  • After enjoying explosive growth from 2008 to 2011, Esor is currently a company in considerable strife, reflected by a heavily depressed Esor share price. Due to ongoing cancellations and delays in contract awards, limited mega projects and increased pricing competition (amongst other issues) the company suffered a loss of R166 million in 2014 and R100 million in 2015.

  • A considerable restructuring process has been focused on a “back to basics”approach, to create a leaner, more agile operation focused on product delivery in key areas of expertise, tendering only for projects in which the group excels. The group has since returned to profitability, with its 2016 financial report showing a R 3 million profit. The company has forecast that conditions are not expected to improve much in the foreseeable future, which will see Esor continuing to operate conservatively and possibly place non-performing assets up for sale.

  • Apart from extracting the highest possible value from its existing operations in South Africa, the group plans to buy into its African operations by adequately staffing its office in Zimbabwe, from where work is executed and tendered throughout southern Africa.

Esor Group Investor Tip

  • As a result of the perfect storm within the group’s markets, the live online stocks chart shows that Esor share price has plummeted from 184 cents in 2013 to 33 cents in 2016. On a positive note, the group has a stable order book valued at R 1.7 billion, whilst it is financially far more stable than it was two years ago and has restructured to be well-positioned for growth.

  • Esor Pipelines and Esor Sanitation continue to perform strongly, and as South Africa’s water challenges intensify, the company could be significantly buoyed going forward.

  • Some investors have taken advantage of the low Esor share price by moving to buy significant stakes in the business. This indicates that there is positivity surrounding the future of Esor shares, particularly as they are trading at well below their net asset value. In the long-term, purchase of Esor shares could be a lucrative move.
