XILINX NASDAQ: XLNX

Background of Xilinx
- Xilinx, Inc. is a United States-based technology company which supplies programmable logic devices. Xilinx, Inc. is involved in the invention of the field-programmable gate array (FPGA). It is also the semiconductor company which created the first fabless manufacturing model in history.
- Xilinx, Inc.’s history traces back to when Ross Freeman, Bernard Vonderschmitt, and James V Barnett II, former employees of Zilog, an integrated circuit and solid-state device (SSD) manufacturer, co-founded Xilinx, Inc. in 1984.
- While he was working for Zilog, Freeman wanted to start creating chips which acted as a blank tape and allowed users to program the technology independently. This concept would require several transistors and at the time, they were considered extremely valuable.
- This resulted in many considering Ross’ idea impossible, and it was a time when it would be more profitable to manufacture generic circuits in large volumes instead of specialised circuits for special markets.
- However, FPGA promised that specialised circuits could be more profitable, but Freeman could not convince Zilog to make the necessary investment in FPGA to chase a market which had a value of $100 million (1.4 billion) at the time, and therefore he and Barnett left to team up with another former colleague, Vonderschmitt.
- Together the three founders managed to raise $4.5 million (65 million ZAR) in venture funding to design the first commercially viable FPGA.
- This led to Xilinx, Inc.’s establishment in 1984 and the sale of its first product by 1985. By late 1987, Xilinx, Inc. raised more than $18 million (262 million ZAR) in funding, making $14 million (204 million ZAR) a year.
- Xilinx, Inc.’s revenue grew yearly from 1988 to 1990, $30 million (438 million ZAR) to $100 million (1.4 billion ZAR), respectively. During this time, Monolithic Memories, Inc. (MMI), which was providing funding to Xilinx, Inc. was purchased by AMD and as result of this, Xilinx, Inc. dissolved the deal with MMI and went public on the NASDAQ in 1989.
- Xilinx, Inc. moved to a much larger plant in San Jose, California, where it could handle larger orders from Apple, Inc., HP, IBM, and Sun Microsystems more effectively.
- During the mid-1990s more FPGA makers emerged but Xilinx, Inc. remained a lead producer, reaching $550 million (8 billion ZAR) by 1995.
- In 2011, Xilinx, Inc. introduced Virtex-7 2000T, the first product which was based on the 2.5D stacked silicon, delivering large FPGAs which could be built using standard monolithic silicon.
- Xilinx, Inc. further developed this technology to combine formerly separate components in a single chip. This was done by first combining a FPGA with transceivers based on heterogeneous process technology which boosted bandwidth capacity wile simultaneously using less power.
- This led to the introduction of new software tools as well as the Zynq-7000 line of 28 nm SoC devices which combine an ARM core with an FPGA. In addition to this, Xilinx, Inc.’s product portfolio also includes Virtex, Kintex, and Artix series with each including configurations and models that are optimised for different applications.
- In 2012, Xilinx, Inc. announced the Vivado Design Suite which was a next-gen SoC-strength design environment ideal for advanced electronic system designs.
- In 2014, Xilinx, Inc. shipped the first of its next-gen FPGAs known as the 20 nm UltraScale and by 2917, Amazon.com in partnership with Xilinx, Inc. started a campaign for widespread FGA adoption.
- This campaign enabled AWS Marketplace’s Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) with associated Amazon FPGA Instances which were created by partners.
- Xilinx, Inc. announced the successful purchase of DeepPhi Technology in 2018, a Chinese machine learning start-up. Since it was established in 2016, DeepPhi had been using Xilinx, Inc.’s FPGAs for various machine learning projects.
- In 2018, Xilinx, Inc.’s Zynq UltraScale+ family of multiprocessor system-on-chips received Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3 HFT1 certification of the IEC 61508 specification. This certification allowed developers use of the MPSoC platform in AI-based safety applications up to SIL3, in industrial 4.0 platforms associated with automotive, aerospace, and AI systems.
- During the same year, the defence-grade XQ UltraScale+ products of Xilinx, Inc. was migrated to TSMC’s 16 nm FinFET process. Along with this, Xilinx, Inc. also announced that Dell EMC was the first server vendor that qualified for the Alveo U200 accelerator card.
- This card is used to accelerate key HPC and several other workloads with select Dell EMC PowerEdge servers.
- Today, Xilinx, Inc. serves a worldwide area with a product portfolio consisting of FPGAs and CPLDs, with more than 4,891 employees in its staff complement.
Xilinx Shares Growth Driver
- Despite emerging competition in the FPGA market during the 1990s, Xilinx, Inc. stayed ahead of the competition, growing as the years went by and exanding its operations to India, Asia, and Europe.
- Xilinx, Inc. sales were valued at $2.53 billion (36.9 billion ZAR) by the end of the fiscal year in 2018.
- In 2008, Moshe Gavrielov, and EDA and ASIC industry veteran was appointed the President and CEO of Xilinx, Inc. in 2008. Gavrielov introduced targeted design platforms to combine FPGAs with software as well as IP cores, boards, and kits to addressed certain focused target applications.
- These aimed to target design platforms as an alternative to costly application-specific integrated circuits, or ASICs, as well as application-specific standard products (ASSPs).
- Xilinx, Inc. went through a significant number of developments and acquisitions and in 2019, it exceeded $3 billion (43.8 billion ZAR) in annual revenues for the first time in its history.
- In August 2025, Subaru announced that it would use one of Xilinx, Inc.’s chips as processing power for camera images in its proprietary driver-assistance system.
- In October 2025, AMD reached an agreement to purchase Xilinx, Inc. in a stock-swap deal, with Xilinx, Inc. valued at $35 billion (511 billion ZAR).
